BHBIA Rising Stars Connect Group - October 2023

Virtual Event - via Zoom
Wednesday 25 October 2023, 12:00pm - 1:30pm

The BHBIA recognises the importance of attracting, developing and retaining the best and brightest people in healthcare Business Intelligence.  The Rising Stars Connect Group is our special interest group aimed at supporting the wealth of emerging talent we have within our membership.  The group welcomes members with up to five years’ experience in healthcare business intelligence who would like to connect with, and get to know, like-minded individuals in our industry.

For our next meeting we are delighted to be welcoming Lucy Neiland, Health Anthropologist and Helen Bennis, Senior Director from Ipsos as our guest speakers.  Lucy and Helen were awarded the Keith Munro Award for Best Paper at our recent conference with their presentation:

Hysterical Health: Unpicking the culturally gendered lens that shapes women’s health

In their paper Lucy and Helen explored the historical and cultural context surrounding key issues that impact how women’s health is viewed, including:

  • The notion, which has existed for centuries, that women’s bodies are inferior
  • That women are seen as difficult to understand
  • That their accounts of illness and pain are untrustworthy
  • That this situation is worse for women from minority ethnic groups

These are critical topics for health care providers, health care systems and pharmaceutical companies to get to grips with and this paper gives significant food for thought for those working in the healthcare setting.

This paper was extremely well received by the BHBIA conference audience and we are keen to give others, who may not have seen it at the time, the opportunity to hear Lucy and Helen’s findings in this area.  We are extremely grateful to them for agreeing to present it to the Rising Stars Connect Group.

As usual, after the presentation, there will be a Q&A session where you can put questions to Lucy and Helen about their research.  We will round off the meeting with breakout groups where you can discuss the topics raised in the presentation with a group of colleagues.

New for 2023 - Winter Seminar Ballot

The Board is extremely keen to provide opportunities for members, at an early stage in their BI career, to participate in some of the in-person events that the Association holds.  To that end, in a new initiative, the BHBIA is opening a ballot whereby members of the Rising Stars Connect Group can apply for one of five free places at the 2023 Winter Seminar that have been allocated specifically to this group.

The Winter Seminar will be held at IET London: Savoy Place on 1st December 2023 and this ballot will be open to anyone who

  • Attends the October Rising Stars Connect Group meeting in full
  • Has not attended a previous BHBIA Winter Seminar

Details of how to apply for the ballot will be given during the meeting. The tickets will cover the cost of attending the Winter Seminar, successful entrants will be expected to make their own way to London for the event.
